Amelia Earhart's Scrapbook

Meet LynnVlcek as Amelia Earhart

Two events of 1937 captured every reader's full attention.  On May 6, the German dirigible Hindenburg exploded while mooring at the Naval Air Station at Lakehurst New Jersey killing thirty six people.  On July 2nd Amelia Earhart, flying around the world in a twin engine Lockheed Electra, with her navigator Fred Noonan, disappeared somewhere over the South Pacific.  The Hindenburg calamity was caught on film and narrated by an anguished reporter on the radio, but its victims were unknown to the average newspaper reader.

The Amelia Earhart news was different, personal.   Everyone knew Amelia.

Lynn Vlcek brings Amelia back to us again through her first person portrayal of one of the most famous women aviators of the pre-war era.  Learn about her childhood, her aviation dreams, and the plans that led up to her tragic disappearance.  Even after all the intervening years, and all the expeditions to find her, we still do not know the truth about her disappearance.  Yet her story has inspired generations of women to take to the skies.  Come and learn her story.

With over 80 hours of flying time herself, Ms. Vlcek brings to life the exploits and hardships of Amelia and her attempts to prove to the world that women were just as capable as men in the new industry of flight, in a time when most women were relegated to the home and family. She traces Amelia's unconventional childhood as the daughter of a spendthrift railroad lawyer and recounts her growing passion for aviation--her rocky first flights and the remarkable series of events that transformed her into a household name almost overnight.  She brings to life a spirited adventuress and flawed heroine who was not infrequently reckless and lacked basic navigation skills, but who was an adept manipulator of the mass media of the time.  Invite her to visit and see this aviation icon and make up your own mind about her.

The length of the performance can be tailored to the need of your audience, be they middle or high school students, ladies groups, veterans associations, libraries, aviation clubs or any other group interested in Amelia or aviation history.
