A SOLDIER'S STORY

"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country, but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph..." - Thomas Paine

A SOLDIER'S STORY
Being the narrative journey of a soldier in the Great War of the Rebellion
as told by Leander Stillwell of the 61st Illinois Volunteer Infantry

Presented by Mr. Phil Lauricella of Don't Know Much About History, this program for grades 4-8 allows the student to hear the story of Leander Stillwell as he journeys through the Civil War. This is a one hour presentation in "first person" narrative of the life of a common man turned soldier of 135 years ago and a study of why one man took up arms to defend the way of life in which he believed. The Student will be able to learn first hand through this interpretive form of living history and touch the items of the common soldier, see his clothing and belongings, and even taste his food. They will hear of the good times in camp and of the death and sufferings of his "pards".

Also, a description of the uniform worn, accouterments, weaponry and personal effects accompany each presentation with time alloted for questions. Material on Civil War Infantry and Leander Stillwell suitable for classroom handouts is available upon request.
